Hair oiling – the weekly champi – is one of the oldest beauty rituals in Indian homes. Done well, it leaves the scalp comfortable, the lengths soft and the whole experience genuinely relaxing. Done in a hurry, it is just a greasy afternoon. Here is how to make every oiling count.
Why oil your hair at all?
Oil coats the hair shaft, smoothing the cuticle so hair feels softer and breaks less when you comb it. A slow scalp massage also feels good, helps you unwind and keeps a dry scalp moisturised. Think of oiling as conditioning and care – not a miracle cure – and you will enjoy it far more.
Choose the right oil for your hair
- Dry, frizzy hair: richer oils such as olive or castor (mix castor with a lighter oil).
- Fine hair that gets flat: lighter oils such as sweet almond.
- A traditional herbal ritual: Amla Bhringraj Hair Growth Oil or KeshAmrit Multi Herb Hair Oil.
- A fresh, invigorating massage: Rosemary Hair Oil.
The four-step oiling ritual
- Take an adequate amount of oil – about a tablespoon for shoulder-length hair – and warm it slightly between your palms.
- Apply and massage section by section, using your fingertips (not nails) in small circles for 5–10 minutes.
- Leave it on for at least 1–2 hours, or overnight with an old pillow cover.
- Wash with a mild herbal shampoo. If your hair still feels oily, shampoo twice.
How often should you oil?
Two to three times a week works for most people. Oily scalps can oil once a week and focus on the lengths; very dry hair can enjoy an overnight treatment weekly.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using too much oil – it only makes washing harder.
- Rubbing the scalp hard with your nails.
- Tying hair tightly while it is oiled and wet.
- Skipping the wash for days: dust sticks to oiled hair.
Good to know: do a patch test on the inner arm 24 hours before using any new oil or product. If you have a scalp condition, persistent hair fall or irritation, speak to a dermatologist.
