Castor oil for hair: benefits and how to use it

Why cold pressed castor oil is so nourishing, how to apply it without the mess, and how to use it for hair and brows.

Castor oil for hair – Moonplix Journal

Castor oil is thick, sticky and – once you know how to use it – one of the most nourishing oils you can put on your hair. Here is what makes it special and how to make it part of your routine without the mess.

What is cold pressed castor oil?

Castor oil comes from the seeds of the castor plant. Cold pressed oil is pressed mechanically without high heat, so it stays closer to the seed it came from. Castor oil is naturally rich in ricinoleic acid, the fatty acid behind its dense, cushiony feel.

Benefits of castor oil for hair

  • Deep moisture: its thick texture coats the hair and seals in moisture, ideal for dry, rough lengths.
  • Less breakage: well-moisturised hair is more flexible, so it snaps less while combing and styling.
  • Shine: a smoother hair surface reflects more light.
  • Brows and lashes: a tiny amount keeps brow hair soft and conditioned.

How to use castor oil (without the mess)

  1. Mix it: combine one part castor oil with two parts sweet almond or coconut oil. The mix spreads far more easily.
  2. Warm it: place the bowl in warm water for a minute.
  3. Apply in sections: massage into the scalp, then smooth the rest through the lengths and ends.
  4. Leave it on for 1–2 hours or overnight.
  5. Wash twice with a mild shampoo, then condition the ends.

Castor oil for eyebrows

Dip a clean spoolie brush in a drop of castor oil and brush it through your brows at night. Keep it well away from your eyes.

How often?

Once or twice a week is plenty for most hair types. Consistency matters more than quantity.

Good to know: do a patch test on the inner arm 24 hours before using any new oil or product. If you have a scalp condition, persistent hair fall or irritation, speak to a dermatologist.
